I've never seen guinnea pigs in an adoption shelter, but you could alsways conact the shelters in your area and see if they have them.
If there aren't any in shelters, go to the store.
Simple fix :-)

I will give you some information that should make your choice easy.
Petstores - you run the risk of picking up a sick animal, an inbreed animal or an animal from an animal mill which could potentially have illness and disease. I personally do not reccomend pet stores.
Adoption - You are rescuing a pet that needs a loving home. Adoption agencies check the pets health and even give the pets shocks and or fix your pet. You may not know where your pet came from but you can have the satisfaction of doing something that is right and saving a life. You will also know that your pet is healthy.
Breeder - You can view the faclities and check up on the mom and dad of the animal to see their health conditions. Choose a breeder that garuntees their animals health when you take it home. You will know what kind of breed you have and where your animal came from.
Good luck to you in whatever you choose :)
I say adopt from a shelter myself :)

I would adopt. First, shelter animals are less likely to find homes, Second, they are not as expensive as pet stores (at least in my area). And who knows you may see the perfect pet other than a guinea pig that you fall in love with and take home.

I would always adopt. There are so many animals looking for forever homes. One answerer states that he/she has never seen guinea pigs in a shelter and that's probably true in most areas, however they are out there.
Go to www.petfinder.com, put in your zip code and you'll come up with all kinds. Sometimes you may have to drive a little bit, but in a lot of cases the animals come with supplies and cages.
Not only will you do a good thing for animals out there, you'll also save a few dollars.
I adopted two male ferrets in May that probably would've ended up being put down. They are living with my two females now and we have all kinds of fun.
Shelters are usually overcrowded as it is and people just don't come to a shelter looking for small furry animals. That's why a lot of them end up being euthanized after a short while.

If you are thinking guinea pigs, definitely go to a reputable pet store. If wanting something larger such as a dog or cat, by all means go to the shelter. They have already been spayed or neutered and are desperate for a loving home. Cost is low and you are saving an animals life.

i agree with what most of these people already said, just adopt one.
But on the other hand, i got my guinea pig from Petco & he's fine.
Those pets at Petco need a good home too, don't think they won't kill them or put them up for adoption if they arent sold in a period of time.
Anyways, guinea pigs make great pets and whatever decision you make, i wish you good luck with your pets. =]

I would go to the animal shelter and give two guinea pigs a second chance of a loving new home. :)

Go to the shelter and forget Petco. Petco should stick to pet supplies and grooming and stop selling live animals.

Petco lets people surrender their small animals and they have them for adoption. We got one for our son there.. it was a baby and they were healthy. There is no charge but they ask for an adoption donation to help care for surrendered animals. Just give the ones near you a call and see what they have. Also, Craigslist is an excellent source.

Animal shelter for sure!! Pet stores usually always have sick animals and they are out to just make a buck or two. I got my dog from the shelter and she is the best thing in the world.
