The family is the backbone of any prosperous society. Without it, there is no social progress, only decay as seen with the fall of the Roman Empire and the British Empire. When hedonism grows and families become minimized, society becomes chaotic and self destructive.

I don't know exactly, and yet you hear that wording. I suppose it means the concept of family being valued and respected. Someone else who answered this question claimed that the Roman Empire declined because of hedonism.

It seems to me that the Roman Empire crumbled after it adopted Christianity. I suppose he was also trying to say that because the Romans didn't value families, their empire declined to the point of non-existence. Using his logic and the same assumptions, this would mean that Christians were responsible for the decline of the Roman Empire, because they did not value family life.

From what I know of gay people, they value family as much or possibly more than anyone else. Half of the middle aged gay men I know are the ones who end up looking after their elderly parents. I always wonder who is going to look after all the gay people who don't have children, though.

Nieces, nephews, etc... could. But I don't see much appreciation given for the role that so many gay people play as primary caregivers to their parents. So, I'm doubtful you'll see other family members stepping up to the plate for senior gay people who don't have children. Only adding this because the question was posted on the LGBT section.

A family begins with two people who because of reasons of mutual love and a sharing of the intent to spend the rest of their lives together form a bond of mutual support and protection working toward a common goal in which they both can share.
Some choose to either bear children or adopt children although that is not a requirement and does not lessen the validity of a "family" should they choose not to do so.
