Moved into a rented property 2 months ago. Sinve movin in I noticed bad cases of mould & damp.Contacted landlord within 2 wks of movin in. Landlord got a surveyour out who didnt do a meter reading on all the rooms & the results came back that there was nothin wrong eventhough the wall in the living room was soaking.

Landlord sent a family member round to plaster the outside wall - botch job!!!

Had 2 contact the landlord 2 wks later as the conditions got worse. Was movin clothes from a cupboard when I noticed some at the back of the cupboard were crawling in mould - £50 coat, £120 boots.Checked other rooms & realised the study was crawlin with MOULD. Some of my furniture ruined due 2 mould.

Informed andlord we are movin out as it is unfit to live in. Came home today from shop & found 2 men in the house - just let themselves in! scrappin all the mould and damp of the walls in the study - didnt cover any of my belongings. Couldnt believe it. What would you do?

Take as many pictures as you can to support your case. Stop paying rent (set it aside for latter as it may be court ordered. Are they doing this to keep you? or so it looks good for the next tenant? Call the health department and contact a lawyer that handles rental problems. Your best thing is really take pictures and if you don't have a camera go buy the disposable ones for around $10.00. Then call the health dept. Good Luck

The first thing I would do would be take as many pictures as possible of the mold. Get several people to witness what it looks like. Document every single interaction you have with the landlord and those working in his behalf. If he sends people who do a botched up job, take pictures of that as well. All of this will help in any resulting litigation.

The second thing I would do if I could not move out would be to use a very strong bleach solution on the mold itself and then rent or buy a dehumidifier. Airborne mycotoxins produced by mold can be very dangerous to your health particularily if you have someone there with lung disease such as asthma or COPD or are immuno-compromised, (AIDS, chemotherapy, etc). If you do end up buying dehumidifier, I would submit the bill to the landlord. Regardless of what happens, protect your health first.

I'd also avoid any "muscle" or threats as that can be brought into court and weigh heavily against you. First, follow any legal avenue provided by the law. In the US there are often community groups or even city/county laws that dictate the responsibility of landlords. They will often weigh in on your side and advise you. I'm not sure they have them where you are. Checking into it wouldn't hurt.

couple of things.
did you get some type of renters insurance policy?
i know in the states the issue of mold is a big health issue at the moment. i know here you can call for some help. We call it the "board of health" they will come in to test the premises for mold.

TAKE PICTURES before you clean any mess up and hold a newspaper in the shot to set an actual date stamp.

I would get the money for the stuff they destroyed and file a law suit for this if he doesnt pay. Otherwise, find one of your tougher friends and have them collect the damages.....before the landlord gets "damaged". Right is right. I have seen some horror stories about bad landlords.
