I find it a little bit strange you're asking this because it's usually simpler than asking a question here.

Just connect your cable modem to the electricity and to the cable. Then connect an Ethernet (RJ45) cable between the modem and laptop. All laptops younger than 5 years have integrated LAN.

If you've done that and still don't have Internet access, please inform us by adding a comment.

By using a network cable. Most of the time they are blue. The ends will resemble a phone connection but a little larger. All you have to do is hook one end to the cable modem, and then on your laptop you should have two connectors, One will be for a phone line and the other will be a network connection (the one that is larger). Plug in. Make sure that adaptor is enabled by going to start, control panel, network connections. If it is greyed out, right click and select enable. You may have to reboot if it dont get an ip.

By the way, as i see it is mentioned further down about wireless, you will have to have a wireless broadband router in order to connect that way. Your laptop would have to have a wireless adaptor. Whether internal or external.

Okay. For starters you are going to pic a host computer. A host computer is the computer that you are connecting to the cabel modem and router. For your laptop that already has a wireless card in it will read the signal from the network you set up. Your cable provider has a router organization thing that will only let you choose only the users you want by their mac address or physical address. To find the physical address type ipconfig in dos and it will look like this xx-xxx-xxx a litttle. You should be all set. If you need more help ask. And p.s. your router is the access point aswell as the firewall depending on how you set it up.

The same way that you hook a desktop computer up to the cable modem. You might want to get a wireless router. And a wireless card for your laptop.

Cable modem will have a LAN point, if you want the connection direction, just hook up the LAN cable from the point to your LAN Port in your laptop.

If you do not have a LAN point (most laptop will have it) you may need to have a PCMCIA card to provide the LAN point. Suggest you get a wireless equipment which is more convenient which the rest of people have suggested.

I hooked up my sons laptop to our modem by going through the add a new connection , chose the wireless connection. Followed the instructions. You can also hook it directly to the modem to set up the wireless or a regular set up.
