how do i use sprite sheets?

Question

im planning on making a funny cartoon with flash when mario beats up other video game characters, but how do i use the sprite sheets they give out online?

im talking about big sprite sheets like this:

easiest way is to just copy and paste them into MS paint or some other program. then from there import them into your flash. usually simply pasting into your flash is easier but it results in the pictures looking ugly sort of like a JPEG file that shouldn't be. never really researched why...
