I think depending on the gender, what markings it has, what kinds of names you like, a name can be chosen, based on these facts.
I had a cat once, and named her Heidi, in honor of the German ancestry I have from my dad and gave her the middle name Ginger, because I thought it went well, with the first!
She unfortunatly, is no longer with me, I'm sad to say.

Dog: Rover, Fido & Lassie
Cat: Tom, Tiddles & Purrley
Bird: Joey, Tweety & Polly
Fish: Bubbles, Goldy & Finn
or at least these were all great names & very popular when I was a tiny little girl. (sniggers)

some good names for dogs would be lily, tamagatchi, snickers
some good names for cats would be bubby, baby, blacky
I don't know any for birds or fish
