When Spurrier was coaching at Florida, and they started winning big, many sports announcers would ask him about his keys to success. He would almost always attempt to deflect the spotlight, with an aw shucks comment about being just an old ball coach who tries to focus on fundamentals. He used the term so often, announcers finally started referring to him as the "the old ball coach" Now they get it wrong and call him "head ball coach" as much as anything, but that s not accurate. He s the "the old ball coach"!

Sports writers started referring to Spurrier as such because of the way he speaks. He talks about calling "ball plays" and going to the "ball park." He would even occasionally refer to himself as an "ole ball coach."
