I'm participating, and I find it to be quite a challenge. You have to make time each day and concentrate fully on moving your story forward. You have to keep up with each character and stay focused and organized. I'd say there's definitely some difficulty involved. But it is a great exercise in building your discipline and shutting up your inner editor that often keeps your from advancing.
And yes, Nanowrimo stands for National Novel Writing Month.

This is my third year and I don't think the actual writing is that hard. What's difficult? Motivation!
So many people say they want to write a novel but are just too busy to get it done now. Doing NaNo gives you an amazing support system to help you focus and get those words down on the page. EVERYONE has other comittments and challenges to get through, but we all support each other.
Another great thing are "Write-Ins" which are regional get-togethers of the participants. Everyone brings their laptop or notebook and sits down together to write.
For me, I only need about an hour a day to get my word count in. So I spend a little less time on the internet, and a little less time watching TV. And in just a couple weeks I will have the first draft of a story that's been bouncing around in my head for months. I probably would not be writing it if it weren't for NaNo.
Try it!

OK, I've participated in nanowrimo (National Novel writing month) a few times, and it is harder than it sounds. You have to write an average of 1700 words a day. In standard times new roman font, 12 pts, that is 3 and a half pages.
Sound easy?
You say you have no free time. You simply have to make some. This year I'm participating in nanowrimo, but I've got three exams each week in high school, and everyday i get given lots of homework for the next. So far I've managed to write 11569 words. I find the most difficult thing is trying to explain to your teachers that you didn't do Ur homework because you're participating in nano. For some reason, they say it is no excuse.
Ah well, i suppose i should carry on writing now, whilst I've got time.
Cheers, Deanna
Good luck to all you nanoers!!

I'm also a newbie to NaNoWriMo. I've always written short stories, because I've never felt that I'd be able to do any of my characters justice by taking it longer than four or five pages.
I actually decided to do NaNoWriMo a few days ago, so I'm a little behind. Its hard because you have to have everything plotted out so that you don't wander, at least that's one of my biggest problems. Along with the fact that I think much faster than I write, so I'll not type out ideas that were important or get a sudden flash of inspiration two pages later but be too lazy right then to go and fix it. We'll see how this goes.
BTW, does anyone know of any actual published novels that came out of NaNoWriMo? I'm certainly not nearly that ambitious with the rudimentary work that I'm doing now, but it would be interesting to find out.

I'm a first time nanoer this year, I must say it is so much easier than I thought it would be. I've already got 10,000 words of what I think is a decent novel. It's not hard if you make up your mind to do it, and make time for it. If you can afford one hour a day, then plant you butt in the chair for one hour and don't get up til it's done. Thats how I'm doing it.
