What is the origin of saying "merde" as opposed to "bonne chance?"?

The French word 'merde' has the same meaning and use as the English word 's.h.i.t'.

i don't know anything about the "merde" one, but "bonne chance" means good luck. it is french and "bonne/bon" means "good." "chance" means "chance" or can mean "luck" when placed after bonne
