My elders at home warn me not to take photos of my new born nephew, because taking photos affects baby's health. Is it correct? If yes, are there cameras which are not harmful?

It sounds like to me there's a cultural clash within your family. While it's important to respect our elders as well as the culture that we grow up in, but at the same time, people do have to decide what cultural values they want to pass on to the next generation. This only applies if they are referring to the camera stealing the baby's soul.

While I can respect and understand why your elders do not wish for you to take pictures of your child, you're most likely going to want to discuss the matter with the baby's mother. I personally think it's important to take pictures of babies for a few reasons. First, because you want to have those memories for a long time. A child only looks like an infant for so long, and after that, pictures will be all you have of their newborn looks. Secondly, with the world the way it is, and how we have horrible and desperate people, kidnapping is a real crime and a serious one. It doesn't happen alot, but when it does, it's horrible. And it ALWAYS helps the police if you have a recent photo of the child.

And to answer your question, there's no real long-term effects of the camera flash. I wouldn't take 100 pictures in a row, but a few pictures at a time. And if the baby starts to get upset or fussy from the flash, I'd stop for a few minutes. There's some cameras that have loud noises when the shutter clicks, maybe look for a camera with a silent or quiet shutter. Also, make sure you don't put the camera down too close to the baby where it could potentially fall on them, and make sure you're a safe distance when taking the pictures as well.

Ultimately, it's really up to the parents of the child if they want pictures of their baby taken or not.

And you are worrying about this for what reason? I believe that one should respect the religious beliefs of another -- and also the cultural practices of another as well. Do what makes you comfortable -- and for children ... well, a year is a bit young for santa -- but the precious picture of the child with Santa Claus on his 1st Christmas -- well that is something that most parents do -- whether they are "Born-Again" or just plain "Christian" or other faiths -- and kids will be kids. I don't see the problem with dressing up either for Halloween -- in fact, I live rurally in the South (many churches in my town), and the way this is handled is to have a FALL FESTIVAL downtown near the Halloween day -- and all the residents can get dressed up, go downtown, participate in Costume Contests and simple games -- a good time is had by all, and in no way does this violate the tenants of any faith in the town.

Flash is unlikely to be harmful in a medical sense, but it certainly is a cause of discomfort. Babies' eyes will be more sensitive to the barrage of photons, and since they're often WIDE open you also are more likely to encounter redeye.

Babies look great in natural light. Try to arrange to take baby pics without flash. Window light is terrific. You, and your elders at home will be delighted with the results. Pick your film to give you accetable shutter speeds in available light.

It is not true. The photos of new Born's are taken for keeping it album for the purpose of memory. After grownup the same photos will give a kind of joy. I think, no cameras are harmful.

Besides a flinch and a occasional cry, there is no evidence of this that I could find. The best source I have found for dispelling of myths and confirmations is www.snopes.com. This site had no revealing pieces, nor did Google. Shoot way. Errrr. With a camera, other implements of shooting ARE dangerous to babies.

No, it is not correct. A flash might scare them for a moment, if they are doing something or sleeping, but it is not harmful
Take as many pictures as you want.
