The debt does not only represent an increase in spending, it also represents a decrease in revenues. Since spending went up and revenues went down, you have an increasing federal deficit.

There has been a lot of money spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There have been tax breaks that have continued for large corporations including the Oil industry. There have been a huge increase in "earmarks" which are basically money Congress loots from the budget to give to people in their own districts.

As a registered Republican since 1979 I am distressed to see my party abandon fiscal responsibility and even more distressed that this burden will now fall onto my children and grandchildren.

America has a big budget about $2 trillion. So it is spent on financing the budget. Some to discretionary and some to non discretionary spending to be exact. If you need a Baseball court in your county then if some President enjoys giving it to you you can have it from this non discrtionary allocation. If you need Medicare then it is disrtitionary.

A fair bit of it was spent on the "war" and failed rebuilding. More was spent on large tax cuts, and even more was spent on prok.

(Pork essentialy being bribes for congress men to vote for a bill they may otherwise oppose. ie-X won't vote for the tax cut, but if you put in a line in it giving X's voting district 500 million dollars for a transportation project, X will change his vote and vote for the tax cut.)
