A substance whose atoms all have the same number of protons. Neutron numbers may vary (these are called "isotopes"). In a neutral (non-charged) atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons.

A substance that cannot be further broken down (decomposed) by chemical means into anything simpler.
Simply said, look at your Periodic Table. If it's not in there, it's not an element.
