A college prof once told me the best way to start any essay off is with the word "although". For instance "Although a significant amount of medical research has led to longer lives for AIDS patients, the death rate is still high." (I know that's lame, but I'm not writing the paper - this is just to give you a quick idea). You begin with a true fact, but then you challenge the fact and prove why you're opinion is correct through the rest of your paper.

Talk about the Human Immune system as our silent defence force. Describe how efficiently it protects us through the intricate mechanism of identifying hostile cells in the body and neutralising them. Then dramatise the scenario where this silent system breaks down due to the presence of the HIV virus and the full blown AIDS. That should be a good opening.
