A prototype is a mock-up ahndmade item made for experimental use or as an example to show the product. It is not the finished product it is an example to start refining the product for mass production.

A prototype may or may not work correctly it is a proposed item that may need refining to get to the finished product

Lots of companies make prototypes during the experimental process to see if the finished product will the feasible.
