Bulbs are to be planted @ least 6 inches, with the point of the bulb up, a good bonemeal fertilizer sprinkled in the hole will help them to get a good start. Water well, then make sure they get at least 1 inch of water per week.

Plant lily bulbs in spring or fall, spacing plants 8 to 18 inches apart, depending on variety. Prepare garden bed by using a garden fork or tiller to loosen soil to a depth of 12 to 15 inches, then mix in a 2- to 4-inch layer of compost. Dig a hole about 6 inches deep and set the bulb in the hole, pointy end up. Fill the hole with soil and firm it gently. Water thoroughly. If hungry voles or mice are a problem, plant lily bulbs in buried wire cages to protect them from getting eaten.

plant the bulb not much deep.one or two inches of soil must be on that bulb not more then that otherwisw it will get no air and will be no more.
to plant any plant ,you should dig first and then pour some water then place the plant in it and press soil on its root so that the air should not go inside.to plant seed or bulb one should not press soil ,to spread soil with light hand.
best of luck for lilies and plants.

I assume you mean day lillies. Plant just deep enough for the
soil to cover the bulb - like the 1st answer - maybe an inch or two.
