Halloween dates back 2000 years ago and started out as teh ancient celtic festival of Samhain. The celtics territory was what is now ireland , uk , and northern france. They celebrated new years on nov.1 marking the end of summer and the begining of the dark and cold winter which they associted with human death. They believed that on the night before new years the worlds of the dead and live became blurred and that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth to cause havoic. the celebrations would comfort them . The druids built huge sacred bonfires which the people would burn crops and sacrifice animals to the celtic deities and they would wear costumes using animal heads. by ad 43 the romans conquered the majority of celtic terroritory. in the course of 400 years two festivals of roman origin were combined with the traditional celtic celebration. The first celebration was Feralia the passing of the dead and the second ws Pomona the roman goddess of fruit and trees. Her symbol is the apple and that is where bobing for apples came from. By the 800's the influence of christianity infuenced the celebrations and in the 7th centruy Pop Boniface IV designated Nov. 1 as all saints day a time to honor saints and martyrs and it was called also all hallows day and eventually Halloween. there would be parades in england and durning the festivals the poor would beg people for food and money and families would give them pastries called soul cakes in return for thier promise to pray for the families dead ones. Dressing in costumes has both european and celtic roots. 100's of years ago winter was a frightning time and food supplies would be short and so were the days and the people feared if they left thier homes in the dark that they would run into the ghosts on halloween when the ghosts would return so they would dress with masks if they left thier homes so that the ghosts would think they were fellow spirits. in 1846 during the potato famine many immigrated to the US and brougth with them costumes and would beg for food and money house to house. . By the 1920 and 30 halloween became a celebration with parades and parties and vandalism began to plague the celebrations but by the 50's it became less and mostly a time for young children. Today Americans spend 6.9 billion annually on Halloween making it the 2 nd most celebrated Holiday there is.
