The states all make their own sales tax laws. The ones on manufacturer's coupons are always changing. Some states tax them and some do not. The individual store has no choice and in most the cash registers are programmed to deal with the tax so even the cashier can't easily change that (they would need to call for an override from the manager and would need a great reason to even ask).

most places don't charge the tax as a customer service, but by law mcdonalds (or any retailer) is reqired to pay that tax. it says in the fine print on most coupons that all taxes will be paid by the consumer.

no, you're responsible for the tax...just like if you win a free coke from the cap of a bottle...they have to ring it in, subtract the cost of the item because of the coupon, and then you have to pay the tax.

i'm not sure but I know that sometimes when you win a free pop from a pop cap you bring in the cap and you still have to pay a few cents tax (stupid) but it might depend on the mcdonalds some might be stricter then others and some might not be aware of the fine print.

No. Thats for them to cover. My kids got free coupons from Halloween and we have been using them at our local mcdonalds in Texas and so far we have been charged no tax for any of it. If it says its free its supposed to be FREE.

I think if you read the fine print, they can. They are paying YOUR portion of the sandwich but you are still responsible for the tax.
