I would first ask your doctor before doing anything. I asked my doctor the same question and she said it would be safer in the second trimester, but she didn't recommend it. She said that your hair will do totally different things, and if you get a perm it may not hold or it may never go away (this happened to one of my friends, it's been 10 years and she still has curly hair.) It could do worse things to, it could change the color of your hair and it could even cause parts of your hair to fall out. The latter two most likely won't happen but it's possible. I was also told that if I chose to dye my hair, that even if I used a color that I always use, it may not come out the same. Worse off, parts of my hair can come out one color and the other part another color because of the different composition of my hair during pregnancy. I've got horrible roots, but I'm choosing to just let them grow out because I'm leary about all of these issues. I might choose to go to a salon and highlight, because my doctor said that was the least dangerous, but it could still result in strange hair.

One of my good friends got a perm when she was pregnant. Her doctor told her to wait until she was in her second trimester and warned her that the fumes could make her nauseous. Her hairdresser warned her though that the perm might not hold because pregnancy hormones change the composition of hair. And she was right. My friend had her perm but the next day only small sections of her hair still held the perm.
This is something that I would discuss with your doctor. Some say it's okay, others will say it's a big no-no. Always follow the advice of your doctor.

I would NOT recommend getting a perm while pregnant. They now say that getting your hair colored is safe because the chemicals used in the dye do NOT get absorbed through your scalp, but with a perm, the chemicals that they use to alter your hair are so strong that they do in fact get absorbed into your scalp. Another thing about cosmetics during pregnancy is that they say to wait until the second trimester when the baby is more established. Best wishes.

I am 8 weeks along and for my first OB appointment I got a long list of do's and don'ts. One of the don'ts is DO NOT COLOR OR PERM YOUR HAIR during the first trimester at least. Talk to your OB Doc when you go. For now I'd suggest using a curling iron for now.

I don't know if it is but i was told not to get one because of the ammonia. But i think they make ammonia free perms now just like ammonia free hair dyes.
