I have something on it now I think called "Bar Top". Not sure of the name. I need something that is fast drying and will keep the top from marring or staining.

Bring your table to Speedy Auto Glass (Apple Auto Glass) or any other such company and have a piece of glass cut for the top. I had it done to a few pieces and the nice thing is I didn't have to only use clear plain glass. I got a nice bronze tinted glass cut for my coffee table and it looks beautiful. You can also buy (the glass place gave me mine) small clear rubber spacers to place between the table top and the glass. This has been the best overall solution for me, the table has a waterproof surface, I can still see the wood grain and it even looks classy.

a good varnish is what you need but you do have to let it dry for 24 hours, if it is already scrapped up then you will need to strip the old off first then put on the varnish, I would just sand the old off and then varnish you will also have to match up the color with the color of stain or varnish. I would also recommend getting a peice of glass cut to fit on top of it then no damage is done to your table.

I think kitchen countertop material would be great.
If you didn't want to fasten it to the table.
You could just make a top and lay it on the table.
Then if you ever decided on something else,
just take the top off and redo it.
