Cookies are small internet files that are used to store information. They are useful, for example, if you do a lot of shopping or travel booking online; the "cookies" keep you from having to re-enter all of your information and passwords every time, so they can be time-savers.
Cookies are like bacteria: some are good, and some aren't. Thankfully, most are nearly harmless. If someone else shares your computer and profile (ie, they don't sign on to Windows with their own username), then they could see some information stored by cookies that you might not want them to see--account numbers, passwords, etc.
CCleaner is freeware that you can download from www.ccleaner.com -- it will remove cookies and a lot of other junk that can slow your computer down.

Cookies are used to retain data. There are good and bad cookies. If you open IE or MSN, or any other webpage or use Windows Media Player, there will be a tracking cookie on your system. 1), The good cookies are suppose to make it quicker to open a page or program you have just used. The bad cookies contain tracking data, and you will want to remove them.
Plus they will take up alot of space over time on your HDD, if you don't clean the cookies.
I prefer to use a very excellent free program that allows you to use thier default, or you can set it to remove what you desire. I should say clean what you desire. http://www.ccleaner.com
Or you can go to start=search files, type in: cookies and your system will scan and bring up your file folder. And you can delete this way.
Or you can go to the Tools at the top of IE and open and drop down to Internet Options and when the box opens you can delete your history, cookies and old files. (I use this method and the ccleaner both).

cookies are fairly innocuous memmentos of the places you have been. They let the server of the webpage, when you return, know that you have been there, before.
You can manage them, but, it is better to let the anti-virus program do it's job, if you are in Microsoft virus magnet environment.
The rest of us who are running the 800+ virus immune OSes, have no problems. Microsoft runs Linux on the 45,000 computers used on and in, Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, the Redmond Campus Aruba routers, all firewalls, and the 400 Linux computers in the Linux Lab on campus.
You can have the FREE livecdrom that is easy and very complete with 1900 free games, office suites, and programs.

Yeah best to clear out the closet every now and then, just go to internet options and click clear cookies. They make logging on quicker by saving information, handy but not vital. You can also adjust your settings to block and allow more/less cookies, but best leave that unless you knwo what you're doing.

You can use Winpatrol to manage your cookies (and more!). If you have a cookie you want to keep, you just type it in and it won't get deleted.
