The dot is called a superscript dot. It was added to the letter i in the Middle Ages to distinguish the letter (in manuscripts) from adjacent vertical strokes in such letters as u, m, and n.

in spite of the undeniable fact that a number of of the different answerers say "identify," i'd desire to disagree with them. i think it somewhat is named a Superscript Dot. this would additionally be used to describe the dot over that letter "j."
