Halloween is a great one. Lots of history on it. You can look into the why's of the different parts of it. The jackolantern (originally a turnip), wearing costumes, begging for treats, etc.

Or maybe you could do Memorial Day or LAbor Day.

I think it would be fun to find a holiday about which I know almost nothing, or now know what I learned was wrong! When I was in school we learned many years of lies about Columbus, so a compare and contrast paper about what was taught in grammar schools in the 1950's and fifty years later about Columbus Day would be interesting - even if you're not an American! Also, there is a recent book (A Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin) about Abraham Lincoln's presidency. There are many book reviews on line about this book which would give a good kick-start to a report on Lincoln's Birthday.

There are a couple holidays whose origins are kind of contested, and it would be interesting to do a research paper on them.
One is Easter, whose origins may be in ancient fertility celebrations. The other is Christmas, which is filled with all sort of pagan symbolism.
Christian holidays were sometimes put on the same days as pagan holidays, I've heard that this was done so that the transition into the fold wouldn't be as alien to the newly converted pagans. Either way, the history of easter, or of Christmas, would be a cool read.

If you whole class is doing a report on a holiday I'm sure everyone is going to do Christmas. You should try to be unique and do something different. Like Rosh Hashana (sp?) or Quanza.

Thanksgiving, Christmas in another country (in Mexico the don't believe in Santa, they believe in The Three Wise Men, pretty different in other countries), The Fourth of July, or Veteran's Day.

Hope this helps! =)

it already passed, but halloween is one of my favorites. it has a long and rish history giving you plenty of material to write a report. it started back in celtic times by pagans and then eventually adopted by all. an interesting read if anything else.

I did a speech on Valentine's day last semester. Interesting history, and cultural aspects.
