It is the force of your lungs suddenly being deflated due to the force of hitting or being hit very hard. It can be in the stomach region causing the diaphragm to come up, or in the ribs or back causing the air to be forced from the lungs. The worst that ever happen to me was playing touch football. I was the quarterback and was being chased by a girl. I fell in a hole which knocked the wind out of me, then she fell on top of me which made it worse. It took me about 10 minutes to get my breath back to where I could sit, and about a week to get over the bruising from the fall.

The force of the fall can cause your lungs to deflate all at once causing you to loose your breathe.

because there is a blunt force from your lungs hitting your rib cage causing all of the air to squish out of your lungs
