My fiancee is thinking about getting breast implants and it's causing a real argument in our relationship cause I believe that it's more healthy for the kids to be breast fed. So, to implants create a problem with breast feeding?

What a thoughtful dad to be you are. Congratulations on planning something so wonderful for any future children you may have. Bravo.

Implants themselves don't so much cause breastfeeding problems, it's more the surgery that puts them in that could be a problem. There is very little chance that she would be unable to breastfeed at all, but she might have some trouble breastfeeding exclusively if any milk ducts or nerves are damaged during the surgery. This might mean that she has to either work harder to exclusively breastfeed or she might need to supplement with formula.

If breastfeeding future children is important to you and your fiancee then I'd suggest discussing this both with a certified lactation consultant (you can find one near you through this site http://gotwww.net/ilca/) and with the doctor who will perform the surgery.

I'd like to mention that I'm a BIG breastfeeding advocate. I've breastfed for over 6 years, spent the last several years assisting other women to breastfeed, and been involved with many breastfeeding activism efforts. Still I believe that a woman shouldn't be forced to breastfeed. Have a good discussion with your wife to be and see how she really feels about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is much healthier for children AND for mom but I really feel a woman should be allowed to choose for herself and not pressured by anyone else.

Yes. The implant usually gets placed behind the muscle in the chest, and the gland sits on top.

Breast feeding should not be a problem.

It depends on if any milk ducts are cut during the procedure.

In most cases even with implants most women are fully capable of breastfeeding. When and if she decides to have an augmentation she should ask the doctor about the procedure and if she will have any problems with breastfeeding. Maybe you should go with her to the pre-op appointment to discuss any concerns you have.

Good for you for wanting to know the effects of this surgery and wanting the best nutrition for your future children!

You can still breastfeed with implants. Pamela Anderson breastfed her kids! Just make sure the surgeon knows that she would like to breastfeed someday.

Not a problem. They slip behind the part that makes the milk.

Yes she can breastfeed and I agree with you, children that were breastfed are healthier and smarter.
