Some older tv's contain lead and/or mercury. This is why many landfills will question the disposal. Most of this "fear" is unsubstantiated but it can cause a disposal problem now and then.
Most neighborhoods have a "large item" pickup day. Call your trash co. and ask when they pick up large items and debris piles. Put it out on that day. Otherwise, set it on the side of the road or street with a "free" sign on it and that should eliminate it from your world.
