Ed's right. To further explain the inverse square law, in simple terms; move twice the distance away and the force is NOT 1/2, but 1/4 the power. Move half the distance closer and the power increases 4 times (not 2 times).

Understanding this simple equation will open many things to understanding why and why not the things that can be done.

Those two guys are technically right, but if this illustrationhelps you, you might want to remember it: imagine that the magnetic lines of force repell EACH OTHER. They have no choice but to go in and out through the poles of the magnet, because the magnet is their source, and they are crowded together. But going from one pole to the other, they spread out.

Magnetic force follows the inverse square law, so the closer you are the higher the force, thus the lines are closer together as the force becomes more concentrated.
