I use a combination of AVG free, Zone alarm and Ad-aware personal edition.
All are free and downloadable off the net.
I use Zone alarms firewall, Avg's virus scanning and of course ad aware is self explainatory.
I am a student and have a very high need of the net, including needing to go to some unsavory internet locations. Since I am a low budget individual, I have to use the free versions and loads of trial versoins, whenever I can. The paid versions of the software is very good I hear, I just can't afford them yet.
Also this combination doesn't hog up my resources, nor trys to take over my system. I do alot of graphic work nad I need all of my cps for Video / sound & open GL!
When I get my degree, i can!
Hopes this helps you ...
frugally yours LOL

This is largely a matter of personal preference. No one software is going to protect you 100 percent of the time, because new threats (viruses, etc.) are emerging all the time.
Your best bet is to go with one of the major manufacturers, such as McAffee, Trend Micro, Norton(Symantec), or a few others that I'm not thinking of at the moment. If you go with a free AV software you will be less protected because the virus definitions are not updated as frequently.
I would specifically choose one of the Internet Security suites from McAfee or Norton; even though these can be annoying at times with the number of prompts and popup messages, at least you will be more secure against multiple types of threats.

Go for Kaspersky, its the best, though a bit demanding on the system resources.. btw I'd strongly suggest that you back up your data on a daily basis and keep an image of the important partitions of your h/disk including the root partition. Also install some good anti-spyware and some anti-adware too
Spybot Search & destroy
Spywareblaster
Adaware
(all the above three are free)

Give up using Windows, and install Linux on your computer. Linux is immune to all viruses, malware, spyware and adware.
Go to www.distrowatch.com to find out how to get all the popular flavors of Linux...
...then do an image search for Linux screen grabs on Google.
BE COOL - GET LINUX

i have norton antivirus and it helps alot but its better to change your antivirus every month because some antivirus programs can and can't protect you from some virusess. so its better to change them every month. trust me, i'm an computer nerd. and yes check your computer every 4 or 5 days.
