A playstation two is able to play playstation one games.
You will be able to play any playstation game on the PS3 as far as I know, and one of the other exciting things you'll be able to do with the ps3 is transfer your saved game files from your PS2 to your PS3, which is something you can't do with any other game console on the market as of yet.

ANY PS3 will play PS1 games...although there may be some compatibility issues PS2 games can only be played on the 60GB, 20GB and old 80GB version of the console (one that was out at the same time as the 20GB most likely have 4 USB ports) unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to the newer models to allow them to play the games as the hardware that supports this feature was removed. However the PSN is constantly being updated with classic PS1/2 games that you can download unfortunately this means you will have to pay for them again but if you sold your original copy you might get the money to buy it as they normally cost around £7 (dunno of US or other countries prices)

yes, the PS2 will play PS1 games, and it's my understanding the PS3 will play them as well. One added benefit of the PS3 is it is blueray compatible, and will let you play the new blueray HD DVD movies.
