If you still have the original CDs that came with the Dell get those. One of them contains the DVD software. I think Dell uses powerDVD or somesuch program, it'll be obvious when you see the CD.

First, what software you play DVD with? The common ones are WinDVD, PowerDVD, and Sonics DVD. Also, can you see your DVD drive from My Computer? Next, go to Hardware manager to see if your DVD driver is ok. If your problem is driver, you can re-install it. If your drive is not seen on My Computer, and you are able to open the tray, that could indicate a problem with the data cable. It could come loose. If you can see the drive and can read files inside but just cannot play the video, you may need to get one of the DVD playing software from the internet or from the computer store. This is too complicated to explain but you just follow these steps and you should get an idea.

Use system restore to set your computer back to the condition it waas before you started having this problem.

Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Click to restore and pick a date that you KNOW it worked good. You will not lose any of your data files, but any system changes since this will be lost such as new application installs or windows updates. If so, simply update and/or install the application again.
