The Constitution provides protection for people, even criminals in that there should be no "cruel and unsusual form of punishment."
I believe in this wholeheartedly. It is in accordance with my Christian beliefs. Let us not become monsters ourselves when we deal with monsters.

You know that is a good point.
however, the populace tends to believe that crime should be treated different depending on the crime.
that is why there is rule of law not rule of mob. a person is smart, but, people are stupid. They fear the mob, so they go along with the mob, and mobs of people well, they ain't so bright.
the punishment is the act of separation from civilization. but, many people would like to see people beaten and tortured on a daily or even hour basis.
but how many of these people speed when driving there cars, illegally download stuff from the Internet, commit a hate crime by speech or actions. cheat on there taxes, or any array of possible crimes. to limit the civil rights of ANY person is a limitation of your own civil rights.
It seems that there have been people in the news lately that have worked hard to limit the civil rights of some people, only to find that they need those same rights that they have legislated to limit.

Civilized doesn't mean pampered. It just means not barbaric.
So yes, if we are a society that advocates civilized behavior, then we need to practice what we preach. Including against criminals. Otherwise, we are no better than they are.

How come people always want the criminal, who maimed, killed and terrorized their victims, to be treated humanly.
How about as humane as they treated their victims.
