Could some1 please tell me how new evidence has changed our undertsanding of teh stars and space

Well, a study did come out a few months ago that suggested that most stars aren't formed in binary pairs like we thought. You'll be able to find it under NASA ADS.

What is your time of reference? (regarding the word new) A lot happened since man thought there was a large black cloth, with holes in it? I think the core of the knowledge stands since about the 50's? when things like fusion started to be understood. Then with the invention of radiotelescopy, new evidences came in about pulsars etc... Maybe the 'star portal' from wikipedia can help you out?
