Animals that are being kept in places like Delta homes, home to hundreds of dogs and cats have their cages blacked out to spare them the sight of fireworks. It is done long before Guy Fawkes they also have to be given special tabs to calm them down. Does that not make you feel guilty.

My dog lies cowering and trembling at my feet when there's fireworks.
She'll try to crawl under furniture to get away from the noise.

It doesn't help that I have an inconsiderate gobsh!te for a neighbour who starts setting off fireworks in October and generally doesn't stop again until well into January.
He doesn't have a bonfire night. He has a bonfire season.

After the first few weeks, I have to be restrained from going over and shoving the entire box of bloody fireworks up his fat lazy dole-sponging back-side.
You upset my dogs, you upset me - in a BIG way.

I personally think fireworks should be banned from sale to the general public.
They are after all an explosive device, and as a result, are highly dangerous in the hands of the stupid and the drunk. Just ask anyone who's ever workind in A&E department.
They should only be sold to qualified professionals who hold a pyrotechnics handling licence for the purposes of official and properly organised displays.
To do otherwise is iresponsible in the extreme.

Yes, very!! Pets and fireworks don't mix, period. The possible dangers to the animal are numerous, plus there's little doubt that most animals are bothered if not terrified by the loud explosions and noises fireworks create. It's not a very wise idea to keep pets anywhere near where fireworks are being set off !!!
There are several reasons why pets and fireworks don't mix. Many animals are frightened even during normal occurrences such as thunderstorms. It can be a terrible time for them, and the sounds from fireworks can cause even greater fear.
Another big reason is that animals - especially dogs - can chew on exploded or unexploded fireworks and the ingredients in them are toxic. They can cause severe stomach and digestive trouble, possibly even death, if ingested!!
The loud noises of fireworks can cause some dogs to have seizures, developing into a life-threatening situation. Sometimes such illnesses as epilepsy can be triggered by loud explosions.
Some animals frightened by fireworks may start to shake or tremble. Excessive drooling, barking and howling can also result from pets being kept too close to a fireworks show, and some can lose all bladder control.
Keep pets indoors if fireworks are being set off nearby. It's best to have a TV or radio on because these are sounds the animal is used to, and it's best if one of the owners can be inside with the animal. If the animal can't be kept indoors, provide a place for it in the yard, such as a dog house or animal carrier where it will feel safe.
If the animal is outdoors, try to keep it as far away from the fireworks as possible to prevent it from being burned. Pet hair can easily catch fire.
Indoor cats can usually find a hiding place under a bed or table. A good pet owner will use some common sense and not let his or her pet anywhere near fireworks. The possible dangers to the pet, not to mention the stress it creates for the animal, are very real and pets should not be in the vicinity of exploding fireworks."

There are all sorts of things that cause distress to our pets. Sirens, car alarms, thunderstorms, strangers walking in front of our homes... the list goes on. Fireworks do cause distress but not from the sight of them - it's the sound. I have always put my dog in the most soundproof place in the house for the duration of any fireworks. To be perfectly honest - it has never bothered the cats. The cats seem to get more upset with Trick or Treaters at the door. Perhaps instead of trying to encourage people to feel guilty for celebrating you could organize efforts to keep fireworks from being set off too close to these areas.

It's the sudden loud bands that they are scared of, like any human will jump out of their skin if they are frightened by a loud, unexpected noise. I'm sure if the fireworks were silent, many a dog and cats would sit quite happily watching all the lights in the sky, then if they couldn't catch them, they'd get bored and walk off.

Thank you for this information, know I did not know that they do not like fireworks as I have never taken my dogs or cats near a fireworks show or had them exposed to fireworks. I can see why, just never thought of it before.

Not really, my dogs like the noise..they run happily around the yard thinking they can catch the sparks. They certainly dont cower or hide. And of course the sparks are so far above them theres no way there going to get burned, unless of course some idiot shoots it right at them at which point said person will deal with me!

It's nothing to do with the sight of fireworks it's the noise that affects animals. Many are not bothered at all.

I have a little dog who absolutely loves fireworks and thunder storms. My cats don't pay attention to any of it. If an animal is raised to be fearful of everything that makes a noise, then of course they will be neurotic about everything that does make a noise.
