Should there be a death penalty in a civilized society and if so, why hang criminals?
That's a question that's been asked many, many times. If we don't kill dangerous criminals they languish in prisons on our tax dollars. If they're put to death and they're innocent we've killed an innocent person. If we hang them; electrocute them or give them a fatal injection. Maybe we should stone them?
I'm afraid this issue will go on until long after we've left this jolly old earth. Should we be too civilized or should we become more uncivilized? Perhaps dangerous offenders will refrain from killing if they know they will be put to death or do they just not care and will do it anyway?
I'm afraid, given this diverse world we live in; our societies will dictate what is an isn't civilized and what forms of punishment these people will get.
There are worse places to live than the United States or Canada!

We don't hang them, not in the US. Since we don't I take it you are against the sentence passed down to Saddam.
Why not hang him? His death by hanging (believe it or not) will be more humane than most of the deaths that Saddam ordered that brought him to where he is today. Anyways, In Saddams case, this is Iraq's decision, not ours.
Personnally, I would want Saddam dead and the sooner the better. He may have been found guilty of his crimes but he is not dead. As long as the man has a pulse there is a chance that he could come back to power someday, somewhere. I certainly am not celebrating yet.
For justice to be complete, men like Saddam need to die. I'd prefer he experience a long painful death. Is that considered uncivilized? I would consider it an eye for an eye, justice.

Why hang them? To get rid of them so they don't prey on the rest of the members of society any more and so that we don't have to waste money keeping them alive so they can train other criminals who may get out of prison before them. Criminals aren't civilized and have no desire to live by the same rules and regulations that a civilized society demands. Some crimes are so horrible that they deserve death as a punishment... like murder or child rape.

In a society where people act like barbarians, murders, killers, rapist, society has not progressed to a point to do away with punishment,
When all people will live together in peace then and only then would it be possible.
As for Sadam he is beyond a criminal, he is closer to an animal in his actions

Why ask why, because Sadam was an inhumane person so he should go in an inhumane way the guy is an animal and deserves what he gets, I know that's why you're bringing this up. Oh yea and where is there a civilized society, humans are animals and prove that on a daily basis.

Should there be rape and murder in a civilized society? No, but there is. I don't like the death penalty, but I feel some crimes demand it.

because the prisons are overrun. ironic that someone is doing life and people are supposed to support them. they have better health insurance and better food than half of the poor in america.
the guards have to watch them. what punishment can you give someone who is going to live the rest of their life in prison? those are the ones that do the dirty work for the other prisoners like killing someone else while in prison.
why support someone who has no sense of guilt for the crimes that they did?

There is no reason for it. Some say it is a detterent, but statistics show that this is simply not true. The legal process costs so much that it saves no money, and very few people behind bars for life escape, so it doesn't protect society.

yes, because people are human and unfortunately crime and passion are part of the human condition. violent crime, though uncommon is something that generally society needs to be protected from.

should'nt hang ,should give them shot and use their
body parts to help some of the people in the world
that they hurt!
Why spend money on keeping them alive in prison.
when money would be much better spent in helping
those who need it!
