Tivo is basically like a computer for your television.
When it is connected to your TV it enables you to set a program to record the programs you may miss, much like the "old school" VCR's. Most Tivo's carry internally a 60GB Hard Drive that enables you to pause, record, and rewind shows.
Keep in mind that there is no ethical way to "burn" the programs you recorded to DVD and when the hard drive becomes full, the newer programs overwrite the old ones.
