I am a more practical kind of a guy.

I pick something I like to work on - a job I like very much and do not mind spending more time than I am paid for it. I do things I really enjoy doing. I do things that I truly feel good about. I guess the key point is the doing part.

Life is so short. Towards the end of our life - maybe 50 years away or unluckily much sooner, we will want to know what we have done with our lives. Be prepare for that moment.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

It's simple from ashes to ashes. You are a product of geological cooking over a hot stove for a very long time. The reason why there are so many different colors and races is the materials in the pot and/or the ingredients from the local areas where the cooking was to be done contained different varieties of ingredients.
Its very simple there are geological differences all over the world therefore you can expect to have different flavors. Try a recipe for a old fashion cake (chocolate) put it in the oven. I bet it comes out chocolate. Ah, but mix up a little white cake and a little yellow cake and see how it comes out.

I hope this gives you a little better idea about the meaning of life, all life on this planet. Stay tuned for the reason why we hate!

Bertrand Russell writes in his book “The History of Western Philosophy” that there are two perspectives of seeing things. First teleological, which seeks “For what purpose a thing is made?” Second mechanistic, which looks for the cause of a certain thing (cause and effect). When we see around us, we see things which are made by men for a certain purpose, like a table, a chair or a computer. This is why we have a habit of looking for the purpose of things. Even when it comes to the Universe and life itself, we always wonder about their purpose. This is not a correct way of thinking, because the universe and the life are not created for a purpose, they have evolved randomly. In this context, there is no fixed and ultimate purpose of life. Therefore all our purposes depend on our inclinations. Whatever you are interested in is your purpose or meaning of life.

"Life has no meaning the moment you loose the illusion of being eternal." -Sartre

Its meaning?

To fool ourselves knowing and unknowingly. To produce, regardless. To share knowledge and promote happiness. To control our desires, but let go sometimes. To accept that nothing or nobody is perfect. To stay away from those who have a tendency to control others. To not worry about anything, because life and everything in it will pass. To be a player (-Plato), or conquer fear and become our own God (-Sartre).

For everyday people:
"Life must be lived as play." -Plato

For depressed or wise people:
"Life begins on the other side of despair." -Sartre

I have experienced both approaches; the last one (conquering fear) is more meaningful but harder to hold on to, and there's a natural/social tendency/pressure to adopt the first approach: "Play!"

Why is it that we only question the meaning of life for humans, not cats and dogs?
Everything serves a purpose, doesn't it?

Now to answer your question;
The meaning of life is, like beauty, in the eyes of the beholder.
For myself;
What is life without purpose?
What is life without fulfillment?
What is life without meaning?
Existence!

The meaning of life is to simply live. People add more to it that than need be, but when it comes down to it. When you are close to death. You're not thingking of love, peace, and giving joy to others.
