You need a simile for something that follows others, is ignorant, and thinks highly of themselves...

...like an ashen pane of window, confined to runners that wait to be lifted and closed, he followed is misconceived ideas.

...as if he could marry himself all over again, living on the fringes of narcissistic delusion.

...his black satin vest was stained of superfluous fantasies as he dribbled champagne down the front.

where I live that sounds like some of our newly arrived migrants.
others of their kind have done well, so they feel entitled to do the same whether it's legal or not; and they are very quick to be scornful of the host society.
