Throughout my whole life I have always had friends that were of other races and cultures. As a boy my best friend was black, and we use to run around and play in the graveyard. He was the first to bring up the military, he wanted to train and go into the Army. I said 'Sure, why not?' and just was there to have fun with him. Years later, I ended up having multiple friends of different backgrounds and cultures. I signed up with the Army, and was sworn in a month after graduation of high school.
Whatever happened to my friend? I saw him back in my home town a long time ago(like three years). He had become a punk. He had let his hair grow down, he bleached it different colors. He worked at the local video store. What had happened to his plan? The only reason why I ever thought of joining the Army was from him, and now he hates the government!
My friend said it was different, there was more difficulty in life for him. Because he was black? Just because we grew up in a small white school doesn't mean that.
I knew in the end he had given up a long time ago, after I lost track of him. For his color, or his culture doesn't mean anything. If he thinks it effects him in getting in the Army(or whatever his excuse) then it should effect...the way he drives, eats, everything.
I have met many soldiers, and know that he just didn't keep hold of that dream.
I felt guilty in the end, if we had never lost track of each other in life during school, maybe this wouldn't have happened.
It was too late now to change him, and I couldn't dangle what he always wanted to be in his face. I hope he sees his own stupidity.
