I just adopted her from the local SPCA - she is 2.5 years old and had probably been a "house roaming" rabbit prior to being surrendered. I had read that you should keep new rabbits in a confined area in the house (e.g. cage) for a while so that she can get used to it, so that it's easier to train her later. How long is this "wait period" - a day? a few days? a few weeks? Many thanks.

You can probaply let her explore as soon as you have determined that she isn't going to panic when you try to catch her again, when you open the cage and she looks like she's interested in exploring instead of feeling threatened, and you have rabbit-proofed the area she will roam. That means that there is nothing she can chew on that will hurt her or that you don't mind being chewed on. NO ELECTRIC CORDS AT HER LEVEL.

I usually leave a new bunny in their cage for about 48 hours, so that they can get used to new noises, smells and surroundings. During that time I will sit by the cage every so often and talk to them, and occasionally feed them a treat or a little bit of food.

When I do let them out, I keep their new area small at first so they can slowly adapt, and then they are less inclined to make messes to mark as well.

Congrats on adopting a bunny-you will love her!

You can let her explore whenever you want - the trick is to only let her explore small areas at a time and gradually increase her exploring area after you see how she does - this way the rabbit gets used to being out of her cage and gets used to her surroundings

Rabbits % to chew and rip up something sheet like. Rabbits will do the comparable factor with newspaper too. while your rabbit starts off doing it, only spritz him with water from a hair water bottle.
