You should try Amy Winehouse. Her latest album Back To Black is amazing, and she has an incredible voice. The great late Kirsty MaColl was wonderful, and if you have not heard her you should try her greatest hits "Galore" Its an incredible album from a very understated woman. Highly revered by the critics, but never had the success she deserved. Jeff Buckey, Rufus Wainwright fine distinctive voices.

Eva Cassidy had probably the most beautiful female voice of all-time. At the opposite end of the spectrum Johnny Cash's voice was totally unique. I agree with the comments about Heather Small and Joe Cocker. You could also add Jimmy Somerville (ex-The Communards) who reached higher notes than any male singer I've ever heard.
