If they stopped recruiting politicians from the ranks of ex-actors etc. and started recruiting from properly educated individuals?

George W Bush was never an ex-actor! All he was was a failed businessman who had to be bailed out by his Daddy's oil friends, and then was given the Texas Rangers baseball team to run, which he sold at a profit following a mega-TV deal baseball had negotiated.

The problem with the American electoral system is that because so much of it is conducted on TV you have to be a good actor to impress people.

Still the best example of this is the first ever TV Presidential debate in 1960; John Kennedy was young and attractive, and Richard Nixon would never have been called good-looking by anyone other than his wife. In addition at the time of the debate he had flu and refused to wear make-up - consequently he looked like death compared to Kennedy's youthful charm. Those ordinary members of the public watching the debate on TV voted Kennedy the winner of the debate, whilst those listening on radio voted Nixon the winner. The resulting election was one of the closest on record, so appearances count.

I agree with dstr. Unfortunately, you don't get to the national level of politics without some major ***-kissing and quite a few skeletons in your closet. Politics is a business these days. It's amazing how they've passed all these laws to change CEO behaviors and what they do is just as bad. They're all crooks. Some are just unlucky enough to get caught.

It doesn't matter what proper education you have when you have to act on the behalf of those who line your pockets.

Hahahaha. Michael Jackson for President!!!!1111

Bush, thankfully, was never an actor.

Whomever wins the heart of the people and seems to be able to do the job regarless of their background should get the job.

On a side note I saw Ben Afleck on Bill Mauer. He was talking about going into politics....but it was obvious he is a complete freakin idiot.

interesting I seen on 20/20 that most of our politicians are the direct result of nepotism, cronyism, and corporate sponsorship on both sides of the isles. Until we have honest Campaign reform America will always have the "best government money can buy"

That would be in a clean political system which currently does not exist anywhere in the world.

Bush is not an ex actor - and supposedly attended an ivy league college.

A better educated electorate might help!

Americans would be better off if Juniors didn't carry out daddy's revenge over a grudge.

LOL - much better off, yes. Might be an idea to not just elect someone based on who their father is, or how much money their family has.

Maybe we should try it! They can't be any worse than the muppets who run the UK!
