Its fantastic when you get someone like that. John Barrowman who's Captain Jack in Torchwood is a West End/Broadway music star as well as a TV actor and can sing and dance really well as well as acting.
Sadly few of them can and they just rely on their publicists putting them in the gossip rags to make them famous. The X Factor wannabes can usually hold a tune but so can loads of other, non-famous people.
I've sometimes heard just as good voices down my local on Karaoke night (obviously I've heard a lot of crap too) but thats not to suggest that all the patrons of my local have what it takes to be a star!! There's an older bloke who drinks in there who when he gets up on the karaoke sounds like Frank Sinatra!!! But he's not going to be the next "big thing".
And I wish some of these X Factor losers would restrict their singing to karaoke. They are very tiresome and their only purpose is to fill ther gossip rags with crap. Everyone forgets about them after about 15 mins as well.
Being famous is rarely down to talent and much more often down to who you know/who you've slept with.

It use to bother me in the past, not as much now. What is sad is some do not even know what they are saying , that little comment they may say will influence another group of people that take the word of this celerbrity as Gospel. That is dangerous. Celebrities shoul be able to express an opinion , but carefully and tactfully. With research on both sides. The public also should not depend on another person for news o n politics. We should read, listen, investigate and make up our individual mind. We as a society put way too much responsibility on celebrity. We do the same to our teachers. School is to learn not babysit our children. We as a society have dumped too much on someone else . We stopped parenting, thinking, even feeling. Becuse they may appear on film, print ads or whatever, they are still like us, do the samethings as we do, and some really listen to the news. Who are they to speak for us? They are in th epublic eye and no matter how hard they tsomehow will mis quoted or a line printed out of context ,ry they are still in th espotlight. Leave political comments to CNN .

Yep, it's good to be multi-talented.
Some modern examples: Hugh Jackman (not only a very talented actor, singer and pianist, but very sexy with it), Ewan McGregor (wow, I so want to see him in more musicals), Renee Zellweger.
On a sort-of related topic, I liked that thing about the guy who said of Fred Astaire "Can't sing, can't act, can dance a little."

There are no more of that genre left. Most of them now have half-arsed talents. They only got famous for being stupid on TV. When you listen to them talk in an interview, you know they got where they are because someone else wrote the songs/films etc they feature in. In show Business i respect very very few people and none of them are under 40yrs.

For an early example of the above question, James Cagney, he could act, was funny did comedy extremely well, and boy could he dance (see, Yankee Doodle Dandy), low sense of gravity I expect. A more modern version would be Hugh Jackman, great actor, known for Wolverine in XMen, but is a highly respected theatre actor, and can sing and dance, was the main character in Oklahoma. Check him out, really nice guy too...

That's why the most talented can usually be found on the Broadway stage and not in Hollywood.
One actor that comes to mind is Gene Kelly.
One actress that comes to mind is Julie Andrews
