I just bought a winter coat, and while reading the care instructions it said to :

Tumble dry low in large capacity dryer
with tennis balls
I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this before?????
I don't know if it would matter.....maybe??????
The jacket is:

Shell: 100% Polyster
Lining 100% Polyster
Fir Trim 100% Acrylic
Filler 50% Down

In the removable hood: ( Would not be put in the dryer)
32 % Feather
12% Feather Fiber
6% Land Foul Feather

The jacket is an American Rag----Brand

Thanks :)

so the bumping of the tennis balls in the dryer will help fluff the down as it dries, also keeps the down from clumping into one or two places- makes it redistribute evenly into the coat, people have been doing it for years, just make sure they are clean tennis balls

Tennis Balls In Dryer

I know that the first time you hear about putting tennis balls or clean tennis shoes in the dryer with your coat, you have to be sure you read the tag wrong. Ha Ha But the reason that the tag instructs you to do this is because your coat is filled partially with down (feathers.) What happens in the dryer is when the coat is tumbling around inside, the tennis balls will "beat" the feathers and will cause them to plumb back up after being wet. This will result in your coat being nice and fluffy when it is fully dry again and it will also result in the coat being nice and warm. Be sure that the coat gets completely dry after washing. If you don't get it really dry you could damage the "down" and it might never be right again. The tennis balls work....trust me!

I think the general idea is that the tennis balls (rotating in the drum of the machine) keep the coat all fluffed up and stop the feathers clumping together as you dry it.

The balls or shoes are used for loosening up feathers and batting to help the drying process. Also I have found that if you have a front loader washer it is best for the batting in coats and comforters to fill the washer loosely to help prevent the batting from separating and bunching. Dry low means dry LOW. Because drying on high melts some batting and that is what makes it look distorted.

we usually do it with bed comforters too. If you don't have the tennis balls, every 5 minutes open the drier and flip the coat over. That way it doesn't get burn marks.

That's a new one! Never heard that. Were the tennis balls supplied?

You can also use a clean pair of sneakers instead of the tennis balls to keep the down fluffed.

I would say at least 2 tenis balls,it fluffs the jacket. Heres a laundry cheat sheet site i learned in womans day thefabricofourlives.com .It has all the tag explanations they have out. They are usually pretty up to date about all the new trends in laundry.
