Self-confidence is something we each develop throughout our life time. Some people seem born with it, others seem to need to nurture it. But it boils down to believing in yourself. People who think that they must do everything right, and do it right the first time, set themselves up to develop a lack of self-assurance.

The most confident people in the world tend to realize that if they didn't get it right the first time, that it is not that they have failed, they simply know one way that it did not work, and take a different tact to accomplish what they want.

They are able to be flexible and open to change. They don't feel threatened when someone else's idea is better, they find a way to incorporate it.

Self-confident people are not right all the time. They are do-ers. Fear of failure is one of the all time biggest reason most people won't try some things. The only person who is a failure is the one who does nothing, because he is doomed to stagnation.
He who learns from his own mistakes grows in character.

A strong moral and ethical base is the foundation of self-confidence. If you operate from a strong foothold, then you maintain your self-respect.

Don't be afraid to say, "I don't know the answer, but I will find out". Believe it or not, you are not expected to know everything. People will respect you more if you are up front with them.

Self respect will result in your liking yourself, liking yourself will result in reducing self-doubt, in reducing self doubt you are increasing your self-confidence!

While it sounds easy, put down on paper this way, it is one of the most difficult things for a person to do. Learning to be honest with ourselves and others takes great fortitude. But once you start living that way, you tend to find it is actually easier than living in subterfuge.

Accept that you are only human and not perfect. Build upon you innate strengths. Never stop learning. The wise man is someone who realizes how little he really knows.

I love the line from a TV show that I heard where a lady said to the man, "You think you are right about everything.", to which he replied, "I find it hard to proceed under the opposite premise."

We can all only do what we think is correct at the time. As circumstances change we have to change with them. New ideas and information will change what we think is correct.

There is no quick answer to becoming more self-confident. It is a part of the growth cycle of maturity. Just lay the proper foundation so it will grow straight.

You build it by not building it. Self-confidence is a spiritual thing, and not contingent upon worldly accomplishments. As you become more in tune to your spiritual nature and why you are important part of the infinite idea of life, then you become free of the misconceptions you hold now that are your shackles of thought. Other things will change too.

Offhand, I'd say cultivate a few decent and supportive family or friend confidantes who respect what makes you you: your sense of humor, your sensitivities, your values. This can validate you, and build your esteem, in a way society at large -- which is made up of callous numbskulls who bring all kinds of invalid criteria to judging you -- never can do.

People say you have to validate yourself. But I don't think you can, or not entirely. Without going so far as being codependent, and getting every bit of your validation outside yourself, I think you need at least some outside validation. Supportive friends, who respect you, can help with this.
