They stand there and cheerily say hello - i dont know this person - i always assume they are talking to someone behind me so i end up giving a rather embarassed grunt back at them.

Am i alone in this predicament - answer me and send a message to the shop owners of this land - that is leave me alone !!!!!

I have no objection to a friendly greeting when walking into a shop. The reason staff ask robotic questions is because they all primed into saying the same things as anyone could be a mystery shopper, and if things are not said or done in a certain way the store loses points! I hate having to do it, as polite, friendly and helpful service is all the customer wants.

no you're absolutely not alone! i have been on the receiving end of unwanted greeters but perversely had a job in sales management which meant not only approaching customers browsing but ensuring other staff approached too. there's a very fine line that's trod by 'greeters' and sales staff, and you can guarantee that the one person you don't speak to is the one who'll complain loudly that they were ignored by all and sundry. having been on both ends i generally smile and nod an acknowledgement when greeted and if i really am just browsing i say so politely but firmly.

Absolutely a great turnoff,i just want to get out of there,I went into an all night supermarket once for bread near midnight, there was one other customer and guess what ? there was a greeter at the door.you'd think he got better things to do.

I totally agree with you! I just want to be left alone and i hate that kind of pressure. I haven't figured out what to do either.
Sometimes I feel I'm just rude or anti-social. That's why I like shopping from places like Zara where they don't pay any attention to you. I just want to shop ALONE!!!!

I'm with you but they are just doing their jobs. Long ago, I had the misfortune of working at a Hallmark and I was a greeter. This lasted a total of 2 days. I'm just not that happy and friendly and I really hated approaching people as much as they hated being approached.

i guess it is common courtesy to welcome someone when they arrive in a place. But I have to admit, It annoys the hell out of me when I am greeted, and then asked "how are you?"...do they really give a rats *** how I am??...I can't stand when a person follows you around like an ol friends making lame convo about this piece or that piece..ackkkkkkk..even afte you have said "I am just browsing..do not need help ty"..I actualy blew up at one persisant person befiore..I was almost in tears and blasted out.."Just leave me be!!..I am trying to relax and browse and your taking it all away!!!"..She stood there and said.."Im just so excited over the clothes line".(gag me now)..

so umm, yes...please refrain from being overly cheery and helpful!!!..back off :-)

yes. you are right. it is really awkward! You feel like you should be really friendly and say hello back because they seem quite cheerful but then you feel instantly embarrassed and aware of yourself. I try to avoid them or just smile politely. But shops should stop doing this as its very off putting and I would probably buy more if they didn't greet me!

Yes it can be quite annoying! Never ever ever set foot in a Disney store! You'll have a nervous breakdown! Your best bet is to put your mobile phone to your ear and pretend you're in a deep and meaningful conversation with someone! I use this trick to avoid market research people approaching me with clipboards!

I totally agree with you. I was looking at some trinkets and a male salesperson came to me and ask if he could help. How can he help? Choose for me? I was looking and deciding which one to buy. How can he help? Sizes?, colours? They all all displayed there, so what help could he have given me? IT's so stupid.

Shame man, it is their job to greet you and make you feel welcome. I know it is weird and walk right past the greeter most of the time totally unaware that they greeted me. Never seen this before but getting used to it. Person must feel quite stupid having to greet strangers all day long as well.
