I recently set up wireless internet connection in my shared house for me and my flatmates. However, we're often find that connection is very slow (we have 2meg broadband connection) or that we can not get online at all. The send/receive lights on our modem are going ballistic. I and none of my housemates know anything about IT but, to to me this suggests that someone else is using our signal and downloading so much that they are using most or all of our bandwidth. Is this so, and if it is, is there anything we can do to stop it and get out internet back?????

I expect you bought a Wireless router,
followed the instructs on the supplied CD and bingo you had Internet connection. Then did absolutely nothing else.

There are three open connections around me. I used them for about a year until I finally bit the bullet and signed up with an ISP. Now I have a really secure connection.

Here is what you should do

Note you must connect to the router using a RJ45 cable when changing settings in the router.

Launch Internet explorer, look in the router manual for its URL and enter it into the address bar, it will be something like
http://192.168.1.1
Log into the router (presumably with the default password)

SSID: set this to something bland like Coffee Cup
Router password: change this from the default to something like beer2468 ( all lower case)

Encryption: If all your wireless computers are less than 2 years old then you can use WPA encryption.

Where the encryption setup is varies between routers so you will have to search for it but it should be under wireless settings.
select WPA-PSK or WPA shared or something similar
Enter an eight digit alpha-numeric key, say guinness
click the apply button.

Get your nearest wireless computer, right click the connection icon and select your wireless network (Coffee cup ), you will be prompted for a password, enter guinness.

The above instructions vary depending in the router and computer wireless devices. If you keep reading and re-reading the instructions long enough you will achieve your goal.

You shoud now be able to see the internet with a resonable secure connection.

You can also have MAC address filtering, but I will let you figure that out.

Good luck

Please do one thing set up encryption on your router. Most of all have it. Its also referd as WPA or WEP key. By doing this huever needs to connect to your router needs to have the password or this WPA/WEP key. And if they dont know your password or key than they cant connect to your network so they cant share your internet connection.

these key should be a hexadecimal code thats alphabet between a to f & numeric from 0 to 9.

TO set this you have to open you internet explorer click on file & open & type the ip of your router there begining with two back slash for eg : \\192.0.0.1

If you dont know your routers IP then click start > run > type cmd & hit enter a black screen will apear > over there type ipconfig & hit enter > you'll find a list of details which will contain something called default gateway, thats your routers IP.
type this IP in the internet explorer like I mentioned earlier and press ok or enter & look for an option encryption or WEP or WPA.

Chances are you are being hijacked.

To fix the problem, several steps should be taken. Switch from an open wireless connection to a encrypted wireless, and only give3 the password to the guys you want on your network. Check to see if you router supports MAC address filtering and turn it on. You will have to find out the MAC addresses of the people you wish to allow and enter them as authorized users. That should stop 90% of the possible free riders, but you have to remember your putting the signal out there, it may be bad manners to listen to it. But today's society is not known for its manners.

Nope, because it not in any respect befell. Umm, i'm not particular the position to procure your information, in spite of the indisputable fact that the elections were particularly criminal. there became no robbery and no fraud. Incompetence by technique of a few locals and their vote casting kit, yet you are able to not often call that a hijacking! you received't be sufficiently old to keep in mind all the putting chad silliness and the courts having to make your ideas up what became what. sure, Al Gore and his supporters went round complaining it wasn't straightforward. yet we've an electoral college, even if you settle with it or not, and in basic terms because someone receives more effective customary votes doesn't inevitably recommend he or she will be able to get all the necessary electoral votes. verify it out on the internet. there's a lot of information about it.

Hi,
Turn off your modem in the back, depending where the off/on button is. Wait about 1 min. and turn off pc. Keep pc off for a few min., then turn modem back on, wait a min., turn on pc.go to address bar, if you have att internet and type in 192.168.0.1-enter- go to Advanced on left- restart modem. It should restart a new connection. You may have to type in modem no. from modem box. . If this doesn't work call you internet provider. They will help you out. Run all your protection programs also. Good Luck!
