I have lived here for 2 years and there is almost nothing that you cannot buy here in the Philippines. The quality of food is good, and the prices are certainly cheaper than in most countries in the world.

I mean this is really confusing me. We used to do that in Nigeria, but there weren't any supermarkets.

Multiple possible reasons:

1. Family member here asked for it
2. Looking for organic/specialty meat
3. Wants fresh meat personally frozen for the flight--not flash frozen and imported here from Australia
4. May prefer meat from overseas (I know I personally prefer the steaks I can get in the US--I rarely eat it here because the cuts are often not as nice as I can get at home and I prefer Niman Ranch which I cannot get here)

I am rather bemused that this would be a peculiarity to you. When you have friends/family overseas, you often bring things that CAN be bought in the country you're going to however, many of the items we bring can be bought here, however we can either get a better price or quality in the states. In addition, tons of restaurants here state in their menus "US Beef" so it is obviously a somewhat desirable thing to some people.

Honestly, if you opened the balikbayan boxes coming here, frozen meat is the least of the questionable items brought here.

I can guarantee you the Philippines does not have every conceivable type of meat available, just like any other country. If you do find a type you want, there is a chance the quality or freshness will not be up to par--again just like any other country. I can certainly guarantee you that meat in the Philippines is nowhere near the cheapest as you claim.

Absolutely,
when I need a good bit of cow loin, I head off into the wilds of Busuanga, close to the airport and knock off a cow, chop it up and get my guys to cart it off to my freezer.
Actually the loin needs to be kept in the fridge for a couple of weeks to tender it up, but there's hardships with most things in life.
The Taittinger is always cold, thanks to fridges.
Other than Kobe beef, why bother, it's all here!

What I want to know is where I can get a never ending stock of English wine gums in this country (not Marks and Spencer)?????

I have lived here 5 years and the only decent steak I got was handcarried from the states. That's why ! Go outside of Manila or Cebu and see how the rest of us live.
