It only needs hot water if you set the wash cycle for warm or hot wash cycle. If you set it to cold only, you don't need hot water.

Buy a Y fitting that will allow for the two lines to fill at once, from the single water line supply, of course you need to set the dail on warm, or hot/cold

You only need to hook it up to the other faucet. Normally, washers can't tell the temp of the water, it just uses the other hose when set to HOT.
the answer is No, does not need hot to run.

On some machines both hot and cold imputs need to be hooked up before the machine will operate (they can both be hooked to cold, just get a 'splitter' hose).

no but make sure water doesn't run thru to hot water hook up. Put hose on both hot and cold side to prevent this

Nope, they work just fine doing cold water washing. You need a detergent that works in cold water, but the washingmachine doesn't care.

Most don't. They have inlets for both Hot and cold. If you set it to hot and don't have hot hooked up, the tank might not fill.
