I have always been of the opinion that if a person steps outside of the law to commit a crime, then he should not expect the law to cover him whilst he is committing that crime! It would be a great determent for the criminal in cases of liability and criminal restitution, and personal injury! So if he got shot, hit over the head, stabbed with a kitchen knife! Or he just tripped over the household cat! He should not be entitled to any compensation for injuries caused! But! He should be held liable for injuries he has caused to the victim or their family and any damage to the victim's property! I then think criminals would think twice before committing a burglary crime and say to them selves "Is it Worth it?" Have a good day!

Absolutly! But at what price? We all deserve the right to protect our families and properties but are we willing to accept the outcome of our actions?Keep this in mind, if you have a gun, the intruder better be inside, armed, and very dead!!!!!!! Dead men tell no tales! Keep in mind that If they try to leave then let them. If you're going to use something other than a firearm then good luck but only use the necessary force to subdue and control the intruder.

We certainly should - an Englishman's home is his castle, and that goes for any of his property. I understand that we can defend our property, as long as only reasonable force is used. This could be very difficult to define, because if someone broke into our house and my husband wasn't here, I would use something to defend myself and if really frightened I'm sure I would use all my strength in trying to deliver a blow. I wonder if that would be considered 'reasonable' if I really harmed the intruder? When someone enters someone else's property, surely they should take the responsibility for whatever happens once they're inside, because the owner certainly didn't invite them in!

I think you should as long as acceptable force is used and people don't go over the top. However, all this "you shouldn't leave a mark" and "the defence weapon should be no longer than 12cm" lark is nonsence.

Each situation will be different and will require different amounts of force. I'm all for it though. Like someone mentioned above, if someone has trespassed on your property (ie: you don't want them there) then I am pretty sure they would be there to cause trouble.

In the UK you open the door for them to allow them to cart off your well earned belonings, and thank them for not setting your home alight, and for not injuring you, or damaging your home.
I understand that an American's home is his castle, and he can use reasonable force to deter an intruder, like firing a Smith & Wesson at his legs, and not his head

Of course, in the US, you can just shoot the intruder, no questions asked. Of course, he must be IN your house, or you have to drag him back in, if he drops outdoors.

I don't have a gun at my house in the US, but I'd no doubt opt to hide or leave, being the chicken I am.

Also, if you do plan to confront someone, make sure there is a CLEAR path to his exit and make sure he can see well to get there.

I believe so, yes. And while it is preferred to avoid physical harm, I would not be the one to back down. They have no right to enter my property, and such an intrusion, I consider as a form of attack in the first place.

Yes, with reasonable force. I keep a tenon saw by the side of my bed in case of emergencies.

personally i think if someone comes on your premises to do mischeif you should be allowed to whack the living daylights out of them. Not all of us get personal bodyguards like the primeminister and royalty-arn't our lives just as important to us?
