Some of my favorites:

1. Category 5 / 6 Nimmt! -- players play cards simultaneously, and fit them in 4 lines of cards... but if you place the 6th card in a row, you have to take that row (which scores against you)

2. Venture -- old 3M game where you buy and build cards that represent companies. Players score points by making conglomerations.

3. Lost Cities -- a challenging head to head game for two, where players are going on "expeditions" but have to weight the cost of exploring a new area against the possibility that they might not score enough points in that area (and thereby take a negative score)

4. Mamma Mia -- players are pizza chefs who are putting ingredients in a central pile ("the oven"). Players also have pizza order they have to fill (e.g. a pizza could need 1 mushroom and 5 pepperoni). If a chef thinks his or her order could be filled with the ingredients currently in the oven, he or she adds their card to the stack. When the round is finished, the stack is turned over and the cards are counted out to see if the players that put pizzas in the oven filled their orders with the ingredients.

5. For Sale -- perhaps one of my most favored games! Players are real estate agents. In the first round, players bid on "properties" which are cards numbered 1-30. After the first round each player will have a cards to sell for the checks in the second round. In the second round, checks are turned up, and each player turns one of the cards from his or her hand facedown on the table. When they are all revealed, the player with the highest card takes the highest checks, the 2d takes the 2d and so forth. It's a great fun and short game that always leaves my groups asking to play it "just one more time"

strip jack naked's a good one-Ace is 4 cards,King 3, Queen 2, Jack 1.Deal out whole pack of cards to both players and hold cards like you're playing snap.if you put a King down then other bod puts out one card at a time(face up) until they've given you 4 or another face card comes up, at which point you deal out your cards up to the appropriate amount or you put a face card down. If you/they count out to required total successfully then they/you get to keep whole pile of cards. loser is 1st to lose all their cards.
Canasta is another really good one but that's 2 packs of cards and you really need to have a professional set of instructions.
New-market's good too but again falls into the instruction category.
happy playing
