I think unions are a good idea but for the union to marry itself to any political party and force its members to pay a political levi is in my opinion, not right. Unless that is, you have the right to pay into the political party of your choice. Giveing money to the Labour party is not my Idea of progressing the movement and I think unions should not be able to buy favours. What do you think?

In most lines of work, especially in the public sector, unions are vital, especially in this day and age where people will sue you for absolutely anything.

But they are there to represent you and fight your corner.

You should have the option to opt out of the political levy, especially if it is a particular party you do not have an alliance with.

You don't have to pay a levy if you choose not to but the money doesn't always go to the Labour Party. Very often it is used to lobby Parliament on your Union's behalf whichever government is in power.

You cannot opt out of paying the levy, but if your affiliations are different to your Union's (inevitably Labour) you can request that the levy is instead paid to a charity of your choice.

From my experience you can opt out of the political levy; the union rules always seem to make this complicated though!

Yes, you can opt out of paying the political levy. I just wish I could opt out of paying political parties through my spending with multinationals who all support and contribute to parties.

I agree with you. You should be allowed to opt out of the Political levy. I suppose you could contest it under civil rights.
